A Leader in Sustainable and Competitive Maritime Solutions

The Finnish Maritime Cluster (FMC) is a collaboration initiative that brings together the full spectrum of Finland’s maritime sector. It links companies and partners across shipping, marine industry and technology, port operations, renewable energy, logistics, digital solutions, and public-sector organisations. The collaborative project is carried out by Finland’s key industry associations: the Finnish Shipowners’ Association, Finnish Marine Industries, and the Finnish Ports Association.

FMC boosts the visibility and impact of the Finnish maritime sector. The shared ambition is to strengthen Finland’s position as a global frontrunner in clean maritime technologies, digitalisation, and sustainable maritime logistics — while safeguarding national resilience and supporting the transition toward climate-neutral shipping.

A Broad and Impactful Industrial Ecosystem

The Finnish Maritime Cluster is one of the most diversified maritime networks in the world. It includes:

  • passenger, cargo, and specialised shipping companies
  • shipyards, repair yards, and turnkey marine solution providers
  • design, propulsion, machinery, automation, electrical, software, and digital service companies
  • renewable energy and energy-efficiency solution developers
  • ports and cargo-handling operators
  • financing, insurance, and a wide range of maritime-related services

This diversity forms a strong foundation for innovation and collaboration. It positions Finland as a globally recognised centre of know-how in marine technology, advanced shipping solutions, and sustainable maritime operations.

RABN

A Major Employer and Driver of Economic Growth

The cluster consists of around 3,000 companies, employing over 50,000 people directly and up to half a million indirectly. Companies are located across the country, not only along the coast. The cluster’s combined annual turnover exceeds EUR 17 billion, and it continues to demonstrate solid growth potential.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, maritime companies have recovered strongly. Today, the sector remains one of Finland’s most significant industrial employers, comparable in scale to the forest industry.

Finland Moves by Sea

Maritime logistics is the backbone of Finland’s international trade:

  • 95% of exports and of imports move via sea routes.
  • In 2024, foreign maritime transport amounted to approximately 86.1 million tonnes.
  • Passenger traffic to and from Finland is very busy. Helsinki ranks among the busiest passenger ports in Europe.

Reliable maritime transport is essential for Finland’s economic performance and national security of supply.

World-Leading Arctic and Shipbuilding Expertise

World-Leading Arctic and Shipbuilding Expertise

Finland’s demanding winter conditions have shaped a level of maritime expertise that is globally unique. Ice-class vessel design, icebreaking capabilities, winter navigation know-how, and Arctic technology enable reliable year-round operations.

  • Finnish shipyards are known for building some of the world’s largest and most innovative cruise vessels.
  • 80% of the world’s icebreakers are designed in Finland, and 60% are built here.
  • The Baltic Sea serves as a real-world “Arctic test laboratory” for innovative solutions.
  • All Finnish ports freeze every winter — a challenge few countries face, and a driver of Finland’s advanced capabilities.

Finnish Arctic technologies and winter navigation know-how are internationally sought after, providing solutions to global challenges in safety, sustainability, and energy efficiency.

Innovation and Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

The Finnish Maritime Cluster fosters cooperation across the sector. Together, companies and institutions develop advanced technologies, digital solutions, and new operating models that support the transition toward climate-neutral and smart maritime transport.

Finland is already recognised as a pioneer in green marine technology, digitalisation, and Arctic solutions — and the cluster’s collaborative ecosystem continues to strengthen this leadership on the global stage.
